To me, there were two appalling points. One, the portrayal of Johnnie Cochran. He was not shown in the dignified manner he exhibited during the trail and that he deserves. Courtney B. Vance overplays him and the show’s writers depict Mr. Cochran as very dramatic, instead of as one of the best trial lawyers in American history!
The second appalling thing is in the series last scenes. The camera pans to show the buttocks of Cuba Gooding, Jr. who portrays OJ Simpson entering the shower. What was the relevance of this scene, particularly on FX. Why was it necessary?
It reminds me of the “slave” who was paraded nude, stripped of their dignity, for inspection. In this case, it was a strip down of the image of a sports hero laid bare. The next scene shows him, seated in a chair far bigger than him, making him look small and defeated. His son knocks on the door. OJ crying, wipes his tears. Jason walks in with a dog in his hand. “It’s for you, so you always have a friend.”
Last week, in LA, I met a few people who knew OJ. One of them, Adrian Dove, the organizer for the city’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. parade said to me, “OJ’s been tried in a courtroom, now 20 years later, he’s being tried on television all over again.” That’s what last nights culmination of the ten week series was about.
When people ask why I’m working on the conspiracy thriller, The Framing of OJ Simpson the best answer I can give is , it will show audiences things many of us (including myself before coming to work on the project) are unaware of.
And, the jury was correct in determining there was reasonable doubt and that the evidence was tampered with.
While I cannot show you the footage shown last week of OJ Simpson walking viewers through his home. I can say it’s compelling and look forward to when we can show it. In the meantime, here is footage of Larry King interviewing Johnnie Cochran and OJ Simpson along with an interview with one of the jurors from the trial. https://vimeo.com/161399923
